I love to

I have spent many years loving math. It all started when I was in the 6th grade. My teacher loved math and that gave me courage to think maybe I could at least like it. Later, as I entered pre-algebra, my world of math began to resemble confusion. I went to my grandfather, who loved math, and asked for help. Even though it was difficult to understand, I kept trying because I loved my grandfather so much and wanted to love what he loved. I was then honored to have many great teachers as I finished my high school and college courses. Their examples inspired me to become a math teacher - the kind who inspires her students to love it as well!

My husband, Bryan, and I have been married for 25 years, this December. We have six wonderful children and a new son-in-law.
I have taught in some form for many years. I began teaching at the age of 14, when I started lifeguarding at a small summer swimming pool in Eastern Idaho. My summer weekdays were filled with swimming lesson classes in the morning and lifeguarding in the afternoon. It was then I discovered how much I love to teach. I grew up a competitive swimmer, so naturally, I've been a swim team coach for many years as well. In fact, I currently coach for the ICAT swimteam here in Cedar City! www.icatswimteam.com/ As I began to have children, I took a very active role in their education. I organized book clubs and live history presentations for my children to enjoy, as well as other children in the community. I even taught a math class for fun in which I would teach about great mathematicians in history, as well as brush up on multiplication facts. It was adventurous, but we all had a fun time! I grew up in a couple of small towns in Idaho. My grandparents and uncles were farmers there. I learned a lot about working hard and self sacrifice from these amazing examples. When I moved to Southern Utah, a little over 19 years ago, I discovered that my ancestry dates back to the founding of Cedar City, Enoch and Summit. This was a wonderful find for me which has given me an even greater tie to the community. Until recently, I served as the Red Ribbon Week chairperson at North Elementary and helped to organize Cedar City's Family Festival. I worked with a lot of great people who lightened my load and helped to create great activities for the families and youth who participated in these events. I believe that's what community is all about: working together. |
